Turkey Time & Talent Dinner

The Preservation Committee held their 3rd Annual Turkey Dinner on Friday September 24, 2004. On Friday September 26, 2003 - 6 p.m., the 2nd Annual Turkey Time & Talent Dinner was held and enjoyed by many. A limited number of advance tickets were sold (there were no sales at the door). People donated their 'time and talent' to make the event a huge success again. Christmas Cards Illustrating our beautiful Nativity stained-glass window. Order forms were made available with a deadline of October 20 and a pickup date of November 1. Following interest shown in this venture, new orders were taken, following the deadline date. Phases 1 and 2 are now completed!

Phase 1 of the Restoration Project was completed in April, 1999 and included repairs to the foundation of the church, replacement of structural beams within the steeple structure, and upgrades to the nave loft to correct structural and safety deficiencies.

Phase 2 of the Restoration Project was completed just prior to Christmas, 1999, and included brick tuck-pointing to the steeple tower and the replacement of the steeple's roof slates.
Project Background

The All Saints' physical plant consists of three buildings - the Church itself (c 1866), the Parish Hall (1950s), and the Office.

Church School wing (c1980s).

The Church is the original building constructed of brick in Victorian-Gothic style and features an interior loft/balcony at the rear of the nave and an approximately 100 foot tall gothic steeple that is a prominent landmark on the Whitby skyline - a landmark that has even served as a surveyor's reference point for past historic town surveys. Inside the base of the steeple structure is the main bell (which is rung at the start of each worship service) and a carillon (which is played at festival times and other special occasions).

Being 133 years of age, the Church building has required nominal ongoing maintenance over the years, but recently a problem has developed with the slate shingles that encase the steeple's conical tip. A major restoration project commenced to replace these slates, to complete other structural repairs, and to introduce improvements to the design and use of the nave balcony.

Phase 3 It is with thanks and celebration that we announced we had retired all our debts associated with the Restoration fund, and two interest-free loans were repaid to parishioners. The dedication, commitment and teamwork of all our parishioners, in the preservation of our church buildings, is greatly appreciated. A special thank you to Christine Elliott and the fund-raising team for a job well done!

Phase 4 Phase 4 now begins. Some areas for continuing restoration, repair and upgrade are the removal of the original chimney on the church building, upgrade of the boiler in the parish hall, brick and mortar deterioration, and painting of the church building. Our buildings are in good shape; however, we must continue to set out proper priorities and objectives for the next 5 and 10 year periods. At our most recent Advisory Board meeting, it was decided to rename this work the
"All Saints' Building Preservation Fund". The goal of Phase 4 is to complete repairs and upgrades as previously identified and review and complete the recommendations from our "Diocesan Inspection Report". Funds required for this work will be set aside through monthly envelope givings, donations and fund-raising events, rather than by a Restoration campaign.

Beginning in 2002, the blue 'Restoration' envelopes in our envelope boxes will be designated for the
"All Saints'Building Preservation Fund". We encourage all our parishioners to participate in this ongoing program. If you have any ideas or concerns, please speak with the Wardens.
